Media Analysis of Coverage of One Event Essay examples -- Compare Cont

Media Analysis of Coverage of One EventIn various articles written more or less lanthanum governor Kathleen Blancos visit to Cuba, the emphases are placed on diverse points, as the event is described from various angles. The Cuban newspaper Granma goes into more insight about Blanco and her entourages activities during their visit to Cuba, as well as giving a more detailed background of pertinent information about United States-Cuba relations, in the context of the embargo. La Nueva Cuba approaches the event from a different angle by providing more specifics about how this particular transaction will force back place. There is also a brief compare and contrast of the ways that the United States and other nations choose to deal with Cuba, especially in matters of financing purchases. The day-to-day Advertiser chooses yet another facet of the issue to focus on. Because it is a lah paper, it has a more domestically-oriented agenda. As a result, the article centers on Louisiana an d Blanco, rather than Cuba and the United States as a whole. None of these reports reflect particularly badly on either Cuba or the United States, though each reporters preference is shown by the particular scope through which the respective pieces are written. The title of the Granma report is Louisiana se acerca mas a Cuba, a very(prenominal) curious title which creates a feeling of intimacy between the two entities. A mechanical analysis reveals the purposeful use of a reflexive verb that for Louisiana, rather than for both Louisiana and Cuba (i.e. Louisiana y Cuba se acercan). This depicts Louisiana as the active participant of the two, the one that is taking the initiative to align itself close to Cuba. This way of describing the situation makes sense conside... ...is a smaller regional paper that is more concerned with domestic affairs than international relations. An examination of three articles from different sources but about the same event reveals the different ways of manifesting what is of great or negligible importance, how an entity chooses to present itself, or how the government prefers to have itself portrayed. The various angles chosen to approach the issue, as well as the use of supporting details illustrates the someoneal preference of the reporter and his or her reflection of each nation, state, or person featured in the report. Although these three articles from the Lafayette Daily Advertiser, Cubas conservative Granma, or the more liberal La Nueva Cuba do not exhibit criticism for either the US or Cuba, they showcase subtle opinions about the newly established trade agreement between Cuba and Louisiana.

However, her parents started fighting when she was just six days old. The following year her parents divorced. Diana and her siblings were to stay with their father. Even though, nannies and servants took care of Diana and her little brother and sisters, the dumbfoundly care was missing. Diana felt abandoned and her soul felt deeply wounded. The Princess was buried on an island in the center of an ornamental lake.Once I said that Diana is the light of this world. Now I know that these words were non strong enough. However, at the moment where she finally gained happiness and freedom she was killed. The harsh world took Diana away and left only the memories of this light, a gift from God, our Princes Diana in our hearts.

The Jazz Age Essay examples -- History, The Roaring Twenties

Watching a movie in the 1920s was a squalid and easy way to be transported into a world of glitz and glamour, a world of crime, or a world of magic and mystery. Some of these worlds included aspects of live events, like war, crime, and advances in technology while others were completely fictional mysteries, romances, and comedies. Heartbreakers, heartthrobs, comedians and beautiful women dominated movie screens across the country in theaters, called Nickelodeons. Nickelodeons were very basic and footling theaters which later transformed into opulent and monumental palaces. When sound was introduced into film by Warner Bros. Pictures, talkies took top rank over silent films. Movies were an art form that had commonplace appeal. Their spirit was entertainment their success, financial and otherwise, was huge (1920-30, 3/19/11). Films offered an escape from the troubles of everyday life in the 20s, and moviegoers across the country all shared a universal language watching movies. Alt hough the film industry first began in New York, Hollywood caught the attention of producers because of its various locations for shooting films and ideal weather for year-round production. The humour and scenery were not the only reasons filmmakers moved to Hollywood. Thomas Edison, along with other individuals, owned patents over the process of filmmaking, and moving to Hollywood was used by producers as a way to avoid lawsuits (Digital History, 2/12/11).In the beginning of The Roaring Twenties, about fifty million people went to the movies per week, amplifying to ninety million in 1929. These huge numbers are a result of the publics obsession with the movies glamour, sophistication, and sex appeal. Watching movies motivated the viewers to ea... ...do their chores and work to earn notes to see a movie. The Roaring Twenties, also known as The Jazz Age, was a busy and interesting time in history. Movies set new standards in society, changing pop culture for both the best and the w orst. The best aspect of how pop culture was changed by society was the change in how people acted and dressed. one(a) negative aspect of how film affected the society of the 1920s was the increase in membership of the Ku Klux Klan, and some growth in gangs and violence. Children and women developed new freedoms and slipway of thinking like the characters in the movies they watched. Women became liberated and realized that there was more to them than cooking and cleaning. Going to the movies was a new incentive for children and teenagers to do their chores. All in all, movies changed pop culture in the 1920s and it will never be the same.

Defective Senses in Eliots The Cocktail Party Essay -- Eliot The Cock

Defective Senses in Eliots The Cocktail Party T.S. Eliots play The Cocktail Party, among all its banal or peculiar occurrences, is fastened with images of defective finds and perception, particularly of sight. The muddle of reality and antic confounds the main characters, and their attempts to escape drive the plot. Within five lines of the plays beginning we are confronted with defective senses You havent been listening, (p. 9) complains Alex to the confused Julia when she asks just about the tigers in his story. Julia exhibits a nonher confused faculty, that of taste at first she claims Whats that? Potato crisps? No, I simply cant endure them, (p. 15), entirely later says The potato crisps were really sharp (p. 21). Soon she adds sight to the list I must have left my glasses here, / And I simply cant see a thing without them.... / Im afraid I dont remember the colour, / But Id know them, because one lens is missing (p. 33). Even with her glasses, Julias sight willing be imp aired. And the glasses turn out to have been in her handbag all along. Yet Julias glasses, though often lost, through their very existence allow her to see better. The spectacles may indeed be a symbol for the plays theme of blindness, but for Julia they provide an excuse to see more -- to spy on her companions, as she admits when she says Left anything? Oh, you mean my spectacles. / No, theyre here. Besides, theyre no use to me. / Im not coming back again this evening (p. 86). The other characters of Eliots play all exhibit their own failings of perception. Alex finds no mangoes or curry powder in Edwards kitchen, altogether eggs -- no exotic or intense tastes, only the bland and prosaic. Alex says of his egg concoction that ... ...cent obliviousness may remember the vision they have had (p. 139) -- but is vision here an apparition or a way of seeing? Do those who retreat from Celias discovery abandon a dream, or an entire sense? Reilly claims the retreat to normal life I could describe in familiar terms / Because you have seen it, as we all have seen it (p. 141), but, if Celia presses on, the destination cannot be described.... You will journey blind (p. 141) -- our normal senses fail us, for we need some higher perception. An illusion or mirage is a failure of vision, so what of vision and mortal existence, whose illusion Celia has pierced? Such higher senses, perhaps, belong to the Guardians of Eliots half-hidden mythos. True sight may be granted only through travel on the way of brightness (p. 147). Racism in Shakespeares Othello Essay -- GCSE English Literature Cours

Racism in Othello Samuel Taylor Coleridges Literary Remains is just one of the essays that presents an attack on Shakespeare for his lack of realness in the monstrous depiction of a marriage between a beautiful Venetian girl, and a veritable negro, in Othello. He sees Shakespeares transformation of a barbarous negro into a respected pass and nobleman of stature as ignorant, since at the time, negroes were not known except as slaves. (Appendix) The extract seems to raise two questions - how central is the taboo of miscegeny to the play, and to what extent is Othellos temper able to counter this prejudice? It is certainly not hard to conclude that Othello is probably Shakespeares most controversial play. There is a clear theme of racism throughout, one which was firmly embedded in the Venetian society which rejects the marriage of Othello and Desdemona as erring, against all rules of nature, 1.3.102 Nothing separates Othello from, the wealthy curled darlings of our nation, 1.2. 68 except skin-color - he matches or even exceeds them in reputation. At the start of the play, he appears confident that, OTHELLO My parts, my title, and my perfect soulShall manifest me rightly.Othello 1.2.31-2 when he is called in front of the court on charges of witchcraft, however the malevolent Iago is able to call on Othellos deep-rooted insecurities about his race in order to play Othello and Desdemona against one another until their marriage fails. Essentially, Iago is a vox of the white race, a pre-Nazi figure who tries to inform the public of the impurity of Othello and Desdemonas marriage. He demonstrates how this miscegenation is threatening to the existing socia... ... that nothing could be made too attach for the senses of his audience, had practically sanctioned it, -- would this prove aught concerning his own intention as a poet for all ages? Can we imagine him so utterly ignorant as to make a barbarous negro plead royal birth, --at a time, too, when negroes w ere not known except as slaves? -- As for Iagos language to Brabantio, it implies merely that Othello was a Moor, that is, black .... No doubt Desdemona saw Othellos visage in his mind yet, as we are constituted, and most surely as an English audience was wedded in the beginning of the seventeenth century, it would be something monstrous to conceive this beautiful Venetian girl falling in love with a veritable negro. It would fight a disproportionateness, a want of balance, in Desdemona, which Shakespeare does not appear to have in the least contemplated.

“Examine the View That the Family Is Universal”

George Murdock examined the institution of the family in a wide range of society. Murdock took a sample of 250 societies of different cultures and discovered that there was some form of the thermonuclear family which existed in every society. Murdock then concluded that the family is universal and provides four function. Sexual(stable relationship for adults), reproduction(continuing to create more society members), economic (pools resources to provide for each other), socialisation (teaches norms and determine of society).Kathleen Gough disagreed with Murdock statement that the family is universal since she investigated a society in India called the Nayar who were an exception to the family. For example sandbanham relationships were not lifelong unions, either party could terminate the relationship at whatsoever time, sunbanham husbands had no duty towards the offsprings of their wives, husband and wives did not form an economic unit. Husbands were not expected to maintain their wives. This society was a matrilineal society. in terms of Murdock definition of the family, no family existed in the nayar society since those who maintained a sexually approved relationship did not live together and cooperate economically.Another persona of family known as the martifocal familles ar considered an expection to murdocks defintion of the family as some children are raised in a household that do not contain men and are headed by females. For example a significant proprtion of black familles in the island of the west indies(Guyana).female headed familles are oftern known as the matriarchal family.Another type of family which may go against murdock definition of the family is gay and lesbian families.murodck claimed the household will contain two of both sexes however lesbian and gay household contain a union from the corresponding gender. In conclusion although the nuclear family, the ideal type of family from the new rights perspective is found in every society. Not all household consist of this particular family. then the nuclear family in my opinion is not unversal since it is not found in every household.

Youth empowerment through quality education

This paper considers quality gentility, its importance to younker empowerment and in what ways it empowers. The paper recommended comely implementation of the curriculum, continued Teacher Education, adequate budgetary allocation and priority for learning and p bental encouragement to mention a few. Nigeria celebrated an some other independence Day recently marking her 53rd anniversary but the pace of development and that at which policy decisions of government activity and by extension its policy makers are implemented, is not commensurate with how long she has been an independent state. It is believed that one sure way of measuring the responsiveness or otherwise of all government in the world today, is in its quick implementation of key policy agreement or decisions that will boost the advancement of any sector such policy is formulated As a resul t, it is not surprising to observe that nations that want to be reckoned with in terms of youth empowerment, religious toleran ce, technological advancement, national transformation etc strive to carriage gentility as a focal point in its march towards development. It is in the face of this, that the steady dec marge in the overall banner of education cross all tiers in the nation and so that education experts have continued to clamour for initiatives that would promote massive development of the sector that is daily experiencing backwardness. In fact, many graduates cannot express themselves properly. Some in practical curbs cant practice what they have supposedly learnt in school. While some in offices lack adequate knowledge and drive idling away redundantly due to lack of empowerment. To empower means to promote self-actualization or influence of something or someone (Merriam-Webster collegiate Dictionary, 2000) or to make (someone) tronger and more confident, especially in control of their life and rights (Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, 6th edition). Empowerment can therefore be said to be the process of increasing the educational, social, economic, semipolitical etc strength of an individual.Opeyemi (The Punch, 2013) quoting Olatokunbo Somolu, chairman, Board of Trustees for Vision 202020 in his address at the 16th Vision 202020 Career Workshop in Lagos earlier this course of study noted that one of the steps needed to move the nation forward is through youth empowerment. He explained that youth empowerment as a tool for evelopment is an attitudinal, structural and cultural process whereby young people gain the skill, ability and authority to make decisions and implement change in their own lives and the lives of other people (youths and adults inclusive) and the hunting lodge in general. He further said, miouth empowerment is often addressed as a gateway to intergenerational equity, civic engagement and democracy building. The need to tie and nurture our youth who are the future of our great country Nigeria cannot be over-emphasized and further pointed out that e mpowering of youths is an investment that pays off anytime, anywhere. Adding that, by investing in youths, government corporations, communities, NGOs and individuals can help prepare the youths for the challenges ahead. Many things can be said to be responsible for non empowerment, low empowerment or inadequate empower. For instance, Oyeleye ( in SUN 201345) quoted an Oba saying youths nowadays see elders especially those in power as the problem of the nation having failed to provide for them, thus mortgaging the future of the nation. He further said that for this nation to see a brighter future, government must devote resources to developing youths and empowering them etore they learn and operate a new style ot national terrorism. This paper however, is not meant to ascribe blame but to promote youth empowerment through quality education. With that said, who then are the youths of a society? What is quality education? How can quality education bring about youth empowerment? What a re the imperatives for achieving such education? YOUTH AND YOUTH mandate Youth is a time of life when one is young especially the period between puerility or adolescence and maturity (Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, 2000). It is the period between childhood and adult age (Oxford Advanced Learners Dictionary, 6th dition). It is at this age or period of live that an individual is formed. The lessons, morals, values etc picked up or learnt at this make up of life that shapes who the individual becomes in the future. It is therefore paramount at this age, to promote self- actualization and increase the educational, social, economic, political etc strength of an individual. Youth empowerment occurs in homes, at schools, through youth organizations, government policy-making and community organizing campaigns. Major structural activities where youth empowerment happens throughout society include community ecision-making, organizational planning, and education reform. It is often ad dressed as a gateway to intergenerational equity, civic engagement and democracy building. Many local, state, national, and international government agencies and nonprofit organizations provide programs centered on youth empowerment. Activities involved therein may focus on youth-led media, youth rights, youth councils, youth activism, youth involvement in community decision- making etc Even in politics, major political parties in the world have statements supporting youth empowerment. It is similarly a central tenet of the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child, which intimately every country in the world (if not all) has signed into law.Presently, there are a variety of youth empowerment initiatives underway around the world. The 53 member countries of the ground of Nations have all signed up to the Commonwealth Plan of Action for Youth Empowerment (2007-2015). The Plan of Action underpins the work of the Commonwealth Youth Programme (CYP). On the Commonwealth defi nition, Young people are empowered when they acknowledge that they have or can create choices in life, are aware of the implications of those choices, make an intormed decision treely, ake action based on that decision and accept responsibility for the consequences of those actions.Empowering young people means creating and supporting the enabling conditions under which young people can act on their own behalf, and on their own terms, rather than at the direction of others. QUALITY EDUCATION In any form or way it is presented, education is vital for human and national development. Through it, people acquire basic skills and attitudes by which they make meaningful life history and coexistence (Okwuolise, 2005). Education brings about refinements, sobriety, dynamism, faith, technological advancement, empowerment, elf regard, aggregation etc (Okwuolise 1999).Osifo-Whiskey (in Okwuolise, 2005) said that learning and knowledge determines what people or society is, backward or advanced, civilized or primitive, enlightened or in darkness. Learning and knowledge are the equivalent of thinking in the matter of who is man or who is an animal. Education however does not only achieve these, it accretes equally national development and transformation, depending on the aspirations of the nation and the objectives intended to be achieved by it (Okwuolise, 2005).From the foregoing, if considered in a formal sense, education is a process of nstruction for the purpose of preparing the learners to become useful to themselves and the society. It is therefore no wander, Onah et al (201241) defined education as the process of transmitting what is worthwhile (desirable skills, knowledge, attitude, cleverness etc) to those who are committed to it, whether they are children, youths or adults in the hope of promoting their usefulness to themselves and the society.Quality on the other hand means of high worth, value or standard (American Heritage Dictionary, 1996), or degree or stand ard of excellence (Collins English Dictionary, 2000). Quality education therefore means education that is of high or worth(predicate) standard, adequate and with valid teaching or instructional outings in terms of method and content. It must also, reflect the three domains of education (the cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains). It therefore goes without saying that, there are certain societal expectations or traits an empowered person (child, youth or adult) is expected to manifest. Along the line of philosophy and the line of educational domains as seen above, the empowered man should l. Be a man of knowledge, i. e. e must be well grounded in what he is supposed to do, or what he is exposed to. II. Be of good nature with good relation and must be a sociable person and not a hermit Ill field of empowerment.Be able to practically pertorm and deliver . By and by, if we are to examine the role and importance of quality education in youth empowerment, a great deal could be sa id. This paper however limits itself to the following areas where quality education accretes to youth empowerment Knowledge and Insight Knowledge is the acquaintance with or understanding of a science, art or echnique, range of ones information or understanding while insight is the ability to understand people and situations in a very openedly way (Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, 2000).One of the attributes of quality education is the ability to instill in learners (in this case, youths) the total understanding and a range of information in a very clear way of who they are, what they want, can be and their role in nation building and transformation. It gives them the ability to apply theory and principles learnt, discriminatory analysis and sharpen their mental reflexes by which they are able to contribute in problem olving whenever the situation arises.Approval This is the belief that something or someone is good or unimpeachable a good perspective of someone or somethin g (Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, 2000). It refers to when someone likes something or someone and thinks that they are good (Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English). Quality education instills in one traits, attitudes and capabilities that makes him/her acceptable and considered good enough anywhere, anytime. Such people are eternally involved in issues that enhance national development and transformation. Even the ible said study to scan thyself approved. a workman that needeth not to be ashamed. (2 Tim 2v1 5). Responsibility and Discipline Responsibility is the state of being the person who caused something to happen while discipline is an orderly conduct or pattern of behavior (Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, 2000). A person empowered through quality education is a doer always taking charge and making things happen instead of Just sitting back and letting others do the work. Such a person always conducts himself/herself in orderly manners and with refined be havior. nation. This group ot people is those who can contribute to the progress ot any Self Reliance and Confidence Self-reliance is the reliance on ones own effort and abilities while Confidence is a feeling or belief that you can do something well or succeed at something (Merriam- Webster Collegiate Dictionary, 2000). When ones education is of high standards, the person understands he/she is in control of their live and will always trust in his her abilities, believing that success can be achieved at whatever task being given since the necessary information required to succeed has been duly imparted. It is obvious then that, quality education makes a man confident and confidence in turn gives him the impetus to rely on his effort. Resourceful This means being able to act effectively or imaginatively, especially in difficult situations (Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary, 2000). An empowered person who has knowledge and insight, is confident and self-reliant, disciplined and resp onsible will be able to think international the box. He is not easily put down by difficulties and challenges. Imperatives of Quality Education It is now obvious that quality education empowers.Be that as it may, there are ertain necessities which are sine-qua-non for engendering quality education. They include l. Educators must do their Job of educating thoroughly well. II. Provision of adequate infrastructure which includes good learning environments and classrooms. Ill. Employment of well trained, competent and professional teachers and educators. IV. Provision of adequate learning materials including well equipped libraries and laboratories. V. Organizing field trips, excursions and industrial (practical) trainings. VI.Provision of teaching aids including public address systems and visual aids. VI. Parental encouragement and support. VIII. Incentives for outstanding performances and performers. X. Introduction and proper implementation of quality curriculum. X. Prioritization of the education sector in terms of budgetary allocation and funding. X. Continuous teacher education. XII. Teacher motivation. compact and Conclusion Through the ages, education has been known to be the antidote to poverty and ignorance, and key for unlocking natural resources ( ObaJi, in Onuoha, 2006).She stated that no nation striving for speed development does so without first developing its educational system. According to her the visibility and publicity which ducation has enjoyed in recent times derives from the importance attached to education in national development. Quality education ensures the development of knowledgeable, insightful, self-reliant, skilled, disciplined, and a healthy population with the capacity to drive and sustain the socio-economic development of the nation. It goes without saying therefore, that in order to enable the youth to contribute constructively to the society it is imperative to improve the quality of the educational system to ensure that th e products of our educational institutions become critical thinkers, problem solvers nd accomplished leaders. There is therefore, a strong connection between education and national growth and development. Education not only provides scientific and technical skills, it also provides the motivation, Justification and social support for pursuing them.

Toyota’s Ethics and Quality Assurance

Introduction Ethics and Quality are cornerstones for sustainability and the economic performance of Toyota and other entities in spite of appearance their supply chain. The devil play a major role an in Toyotas strategic plan they are woven in the very fabric of the culture of the organization and they are integrated in risk management as a part of the contingency plan. This paper seeks to highlight Toyotas concepts of ethics and quality their continuous benchmarks for good as well as their use of knowledge management throughout their supply chain.Ethics in the Supply Chain As part of my compendium of Toyotas underlying concept of ethics for supply chain management, the following is five essential values implemented by Toyota 1. Succubus on Top CHAPTER 18

Thats non funny, I verbalise.Seems same(p) a reasonable question.I looked at him and then wrapped my arms around myself. Is that al i youre going to say?II dont really know what else to say. This is the part where you yell at me.His eyebrows rose. Oh, I see. I didnt know this was already scripted tabu. Thats not whatlook. I slept with roughone else. And not just slept. I didnt progress to to do itnot the way I have to with humans. You bring that, right?Yes, he said, still dead calm. And I wasnt drunk or anything. Tipsy maybe, scarcely still in control of my senses.Yes.So arent you mad?Stunned is the dominant emotion at the moment. Finding out someone impersonated you is almost more troubling than the sex part.He didnt impersonate you, perseI mean, I knew it was him.I know. But its still weird. When he fell silent again, I could only stare with incredulity. He caught my look and retuned it.What do you call for? This fourth dimension he did sound annoyed, almost angry. Do you want me to be mad? Will that likepunish you or something? Is that what you want?I said life force and realized that was exactly what I precious. I had read a book once where a guy accidentally killed a girl bandage thrust drunk. His powerful family had managed to keep him out of jail, and hed loathed it. Hed wanted the cleansing catharsis of real punishment, of paying for his crimes. Right now, I needed the same thing.I deserve it, I told Seth. His voice was cold. Well, Im not going to give it to you right now. You cant dictate what I feel. Sorry. My mouth started to drop open, unsure what to do with this turn of events. The ringing of my carrel phone interrupted my rumination. I glanced at my purse, then let the phone go to voice mail. A moment later, it rang again. You should answer it, Seth told me.I didnt want to talk to anyone. I wanted to crawl into a hole. But I got the phone and read the display. No one I recognized. Sometimes that was Jerome. If I didnt answer, the giant was likely to teleport on all over, and that was quite possibly the only thing that could make this scenario worse.Im sorry, I said softly to Seth, just before I answered. I didnt know if I was apologizing for the interruption or what Id done with Bastien. Hello?Hey, Georgina. This is Wyatt. It took me a moment. From Dougs band. Hey, hows it going?Bad. I didnt know who else to call. Im at the hospital with Doug. My heart stopped. Oh my God. What happened? He, uh, took some pills. What build of pills? Not sure. But he took a whole bottle of them.Wyatts news spurred Seth and me to action. It was funny how tragedy could override anger. Whatever unresolved issues ensnared us, we put them on hold as I drove us downtown.Wyatt had briefly told the rest of the story as Id left my apartment at a run. Alec hadnt come with with his latest shipment. Doug had crashed again, plunging into that frightening unlitness Id observed before. Wyatt didnt entirely know what had triggered the overdose. H e blamed everything from a suicidal urge to a desperate attempt at recapturing the high through other means. The emergency room had pumped his stomach, and the doctor said he was okay for now, scarcely he hadnt yet regained consciousness. Wyatt had called me because Doug had no family here, and no one knew how to contact the ones who lived out of town.Corey and Min were there when we arrived. They elaborated a bit more for us and said there was no change in Dougs condition. Seth stayed silent, but I could tell he was as concerned as I was.I asked if I could see Doug, and a nurse told me I could. I entered the room alone and found him asleep, hooked up to tubes and a bleeping machine. I had watched medical technology change over the years, from leeches to defibrillators, but that didnt mean I felt comfortable with any of it. Machines that kept people alive rubbed me the wrong way. They werent natural, even if they did good.Oh, Doug, I murmured, sitting at his bedside. His skin was pale, his hand cold and clammy. The bleeping machine registered a steady heartbeat, so that was something. None of the other readouts meant anything to me.I watched him, feeling helpless. Mortals, I thought, were fragile things, and there was nothing I could do about that. Many, galore(postnominal) years ago, Bastien and I had worked at a dance hall in Paris. Dancers in those days were almost always prostitutes too, but I hadnt minded. The opportunity had provided me with both(prenominal) succubus energy and monetary income. Bastien had been a bouncer and ostensibly my lover. This allowed him to sing my praises, bolstering my reputation and sending me a large clientele.Theres a unripened man who shows up every night, the incubus told me one day. He has virgin stamped all over him, but hes rich too. Ive talked to him a few times. He doesnt like the predilection of paying for sex, but hes completely obsessed with you.The news pleased me, and when Bastien pointed out the gentleman, I made a lot of eye contact with him throughout the performance. Sure enough, a manservant of his discretely solicited me on behalf of his employer afterward, and I hurried to prepare myself backstage.Josephine, called a voice beside me. I turned and saw another dancer, an especial friend of mine named Dominique.Hey, I told her, grinning. I have a nice prospect Ive got to get to. Her grim face made me pause. Whats wrong?Dominique was small and blond, with an almost waifish appearance that made her look like she wasnt acquire enough to eat. That wasnt a surprise, however. None of us in that profession ever got enough to eat.Josephine she murmured, blue eyes wide. I need your help. I thinkI think Im pregnant.I stopped in my tracks. Are you sure?Pretty sure. II dont know what to do. I need this job. You know I do.I nodded. From the wings, Jean the man who took cuts from our liaisons yelled at me to hurry up and meet my young man. I gave Dominique a quick hug.I have to go do this. I ll find you later, okay? Well figure something out.But I never really got a later. The young man, Etienne, proved to be adorable. He was much younger than my ostensible age, and engaged to be married. He was torn on the issue of sex. Part of him felt he needed to be pure for his bride the other part wanted to be experienced on his wedding night. That was the part that won out, the part that brought him to my bed and gave me the succubus bonus of both a moral corruption and an energy yield. He resented me for both my lifestyle and my hold over him, but that didnt stop him from coming back every day for the next few weeks.I hate you for this, he told me one day after wed been together. He lay back against the sheets, in a sweaty, postcoital repose. I stood near the bed, putting my clothes on while he watched. Marry me.I laughed out loud, tossing my hair then honey blond and curly over one shoulder. He flushed angrily. He had dark eyes and hair and a perennially brooding look. Is that funny?Only because you hate me in one breath and love me in the other. I smiled as I laced up my undergarments. I suppose there are a lot of marriages like that. Not everythings a joke, he said.Maybe not, I agreed. But this comes pretty close. Are you turning me down?I pulled my dress over my head. Of course I am. You have no idea what youre asking. Its ridiculous. You treat me like Im a child sometimes, he declared, sitting up straighten Youre not that much older than me. You have no right to act so omniscientespecially since youre aI grinned at him. A whore? He had the grace to look embarrassed. And that, sweeting, is the problem. Never mind your familys scandalized reaction. Even if we managed to pull it off, youd never get over that. Youd spend the rest of our marriage which would probably be short-lived obsessing about all the men Id been with. Wondering if one of them had been better. Wondering if Id done something with them that you thought was new and novel with you.Angry, he stood up and pulled on his pants. I would have thought youd be grateful.Flattered, I said coldly, but nothing more. That wasnt entirely true. The accuracy was, disrespect his youthful certainty and mood swings, I liked Etienne. A lot. Something about him appealed to me. Maybe it was because all that emotionality and pride came from an artistic nature. He particolored as a hobby. There it was again, my unfortunate obsession with creative men. Luckily, at that time in my life, I had enough sense to avoid deep entanglements with humans.I wish you could choose who you love, he said bitterly. Because I wouldnt choose you, you know. But, here we are. I cant stop thinking about you. I feel like theres some pull to you I cant fight.Im sorry, I said gently, surprised at the small ache in my heart. Wait until youre married. Your wife will make you forget all about me.No. She doesnt even compare.Plain? Egotistical of me, perhaps, but I heard it a lot.Boring, he replied. Then Id heard a scr eam, a bloodcurdling, horror-filled scream. I forgot all about Etienne and tore out of the small, dank room. Down the hall I ran until I found a congregation of people and the source of distress. It was Dominique. She sprawled over a narrow pallet, lying in blood. My God, I gasped, kneeling beside her. What happened? But I already knew. I didnt need the forthcoming explanation from the other dancers. I had neglected her pleas for help a couple weeks ago, caught up in my own whirlwind romance. So she had sought her own solution, as so many lower-class women practically did. Unfortunately, there were no machines or sanitizing in those days. An abortion was a dangerous, often deadly, business.Oh God, I said again. I had never lost the need to appeal to my creator, despite my theoretical renouncement.I clutched her hand, not knowing what to do. A half-dressed Etienne appeared in the crowd. I looked up at him desperately. You have to go get a doctor. Please.Whatever hurt pride he harbored over my rejection, he couldnt refuse me in that moment. I saw him make motions to leave, but Bastien grabbed his arm. No, it doesnt matter. To me he said Shes gone, Fleur .I looked at Dominiques young face. Her skin was pale, eyes blank and glazed over as they stared at nothing. I knew I should close them, but suddenly I didnt want to see her. I dropped her hand, slowly backing up, staring in horror. It was by no means the first time Id seen a dead body, but something struck me about it then Id never really considered with such shocking clarity. One moment she was here, the next she wasnt. Oh, the difference one heartbeat could make. The stink of mortality hung in the air, painting the awful truth about humans. How short their lives were. And fragile. They were like paper dolls among us, turning to ash in the blink of an eye. How many had I seen come and go in over a millennium? How many had I seen pass from infancy to a gray-haired death? The stink of mortality. It threatened to overwhelm the room. How could no one else sense it? I hated itand I feared it. Feeling suffocated, I backed up further. Both Bastien and Etienne reached for me in some fumbling attempt at comfort, but I wanted none of it. Dominique, barely out of childhood, had just bled her life away in front of me. What fragile things humans were. I had to get out of there before I became sick. I turned from those who would console me and ran away. What fragile things humans are, I murmured to Doug. The feeling that welled up within me now as I sat beside him was not sorrow or despair. It was anger. White-hot anger. Humans were fragile, but some of them were still in my care. And whether that was foolish or not on my part, I could not shirk my duty. Doug was one of my humans. And someone had nearly cut his time short.I stood up, gave his hand a last squeeze, and strode out of the room. From the shocked glances Corey, Min, and Wyatt gave me, I mustiness have looked terrifying. I hit the pause button on my righteous fury when I noticed something. Wheres Seth?He said he had to go, said Corey. He left you this.He handed me a scrap of paper with Seths scrawled writing.Thetis, Ill talk to you later.I stared at it, suddenly feeling nothing. I went numb. My mind would not allow me to focus on Seth just then. I crumpled the paper up, said good-bye to the band, and left the hospital. When I reached the lobby, I took out my jail cell phone and dialed.Alec? This is Georgina.Hey, Georgina I heard the anxious note in his voice. Almost desperate. You were right, I began, hoping I sounded anxious too. You were right. I need more. Now. Tonight. Can you do it?Yes, he said. There was palpable relief in his voice. Absolutely I can do it.We set up a meeting spot immediately. It couldnt be too soon for me. Id been on an emotional roller coaster in the last twenty-four hours, and I was about to take it out on Alec. I couldnt wait. The fact that he seemed so eager for it was icing on the cake.Oh, hey , Georgina? he asked, just before we disconnected.Yeah? His voice sounded strange I couldnt decipher the emotion. You have no idea how glad I am you called.

Pygmalion Poetry Deconstruction

Poetry Deconstruction The Story of Pygmalion and the Statue (1713 translation) The poem The Story of Pygmalion and the Statue was originally written in Greek by Ovid, and is found in Book hug drug of his work, Metamorphoses. It was translated into English in 1713, and this translation employs techniques to appeal to the readers of the day, and reveals their views on a variety of topics, including obsession and narcissism. Pygmalion, a sculptor, shunned all women for their frivolity, instead turning to his art.He created a inscribe out of ivory of a woman so accurate that he grew to love her, and wished for his ivory virgin to be real. The goddess granted his secret desire, and blessed the orthodontic braces with a son. The readership of the poem would have consisted predominately of ordinal century upper class males, so the poem is, in many parts, structured to interest this group of individuals. The ordinal century gentleman would have identified with the line Well pleasd to want a consort of his bed, as a mistress was the only if thing that was not provided instantly for them.Pygmalion, a man who is able to function without this, would have been held in high esteem by the reader, and perhaps would have enliven them to follow his example in being independent. The line, Yet fearing idleness, the nurse of ill, shows the society of the times attitude towards inactivity, in that it is, or leads to, a sickness. This parable relates to the saying, idle hands are the devils playthings, which would have been the view of the community at the time of the translation.Another quote that shows the opinion of the people of the eighteenth century is the powrful bribes of love, indicating that love could be bought. In 1713, this would not have been an oxymoron, as many married someone to gain their wealth, making this rehearsal ring true to the eighteenth century reader. The poet also refers to the birth of Pygmalion and the statues child, as a way that they crown their bliss. This metaphor signifies a very happy ending, especially to the gentleman reader, as procreation was a very important issue an heir was necessary.Note also that the child is male. This engineers a perfect close to the story of Pygmalion. Crown could also be a symbol of the patriarchal values present, as it was rare for a woman to rule (wear the crown). A question to pose it what the eighteenth century gentleman thought of Pygmalions obsessive nature and narcissism. The fact that he Abhorrd all womankind makes it appear as if he thinks he is above women, as he has lumped them all into the same, generalised bracket, including those who do not follow the lifestyle choices he disapproves of.The alliteration used in loathing their lascivious life emphasises Pygmalions misogyny, and therefore his very high opinion of himself. His narcissistic nature is further explored through the use personification record could not with his art compare. Here, he is praising his own amazing skill for creating something better than Nature, or immortal, could make. The line Pleasd with his idol, reminds on of Genesis, where God is pleased with himself after he creates the world. Pygmalion is comparing himself to God, revealing his large ego.The poet delves into his obsessive nature with the caesura in the line, he commends, admires, Adores forcing the readers to pause and examine the depth of Pygmalions obsession towards the statue of his creation, and by extension, himself. This is emphasised again in the repetition in the lines And all the sparkling stones and odrous green. The word and is repeated five times in these four lines, highlighting the excessiveness of his gift giving and his over the top behaviour.Due to the positive finish, where Pygmalions bliss is crowned with the birth of a son, and the want of consequences for his terribly high opinion of himself, one might conclude that over-extravagant pride was considered commonplace in the eighteenth century, a nd obsessiveness was not considered unhealthy, perhaps because it served to combat idleness. The mixed ideas in the poem support this. The translation of The Story of Pygmalion and the Statue effectively utilises techniques and devices in order to appeal to its readership, the upper class gentleman of 1713 and onward. 715 words

Artemis Fowl Book Report

He had devised a intention that would restore his familys fortune, a plan that could people civilizations and plunge the planet into a cross species war. Was at Ho Chi Mini City waiting for our contact Guan Unguent accompanied by butler. As we waited Guan walked up to us dressed as a waiter. Obvious. Handmade loafers, a silk shirt, three gold signet rings. Pathetic really. Only to check for weapons. Who does he approximate I am? I told him that I was unarmed solely for fun I told him about Butler. How he had tons of weapons and how he could kill him even without them. It was hilarious. He looked as if he were going to cry. Finally he told us to look at a picture he had. It was a wrinkly green hand. Guan whence told us that she is a healer that works in exchange for rice wine. She was always drunk. He led us to a fire escape in Tu Do Street. I asked Butler for the night vision goggles. Inside I saw the green old hag. She asked for wine. Butler gave her the Irish whiskey. It was the same wrinkly green hand. I told Butler to give Guan the money. Finally things were going according to plan. She asked me if had anything that needed healing. I told her alone destinyed her book. She threatened to kill me. I told her that I would save her if she gave me the book. She gave me a questioning look. Perhaps the affects of the holy water hadnt dismissed yet. Told her about it and she said I murdered her. Then she started listening to what I had to say. Told her that we had two ampoules 1 a vial of spring water from the fairy well sixty meters below Tara, Ireland the most magical place on the Earth, it would counteract the holy water and 2 a booster with a virus that feeds on alcohol which will flush every drop of rice wine out of her body. She asked me how could I trust you. That was a good question. Some meters I cant even trust myself. I had to say something so I told her that I would give her the first vial on credence and the second one after am even the book for at least 30 minutes. Butler gave her the first shot with the syringe gun then she gave me the book. I took my camera and took a picture of every page of the characters then gave it back and Butler injected the second vial, we left immediately. A centurys worth of alcohol going away the body isnt a pretty sight. When we got home I checked on mum.Sleeping like a baby. If she had recovered I would have to cancel everything and go to school. I went to my room uploading the files into my computer. It was a mixture of symbols and characters they were all around the page in no regular order. I printed all the ages and tacked them to the wall. First I needed a central point language so I started with English, Chinese, Arabic, Greek, Cyrillic, and even Gingham texts. There was still nothing. Was frustrated none of the characters had a match. I thought hard and reputeed the only base language didnt try Egyptian. Finally a hit.The computer didnt show anything so I would have to take in every G nomish figure and equation it with the hieroglyphics. At midnight when I was done I fed my findings into the Macintosh. I pressed decode. Papers of meaningless gibberish came flowing out. Now all I had to do was find out the order it was written in. The Arabic right to left, no, the Chinese columns, no. Nothing worked. Then I noticed a tiny window pane in the middle Of each page with arrows around it Then I knew that it was read in spirals. I typed spiral on the read menu and the letter came out in lines, finally. This was it.The Book of the People. Being Instructions to our Magics And Life Rules. Carry me always, carry me well. Am thy teacher of herb and spell am thy link to causality arcane. Forget me and thy magic will wane. Ten times ten commandments there be. They will answer every mystery. Cures, curses, alchemy. These secrets shall be thin, through me. But fairy remember this above all. Am not for those in mud that crawl. And forever doomed shall be the one, who betrays my secrets one by one Finally the book was translated and read. Now it was time for the thing I do best plot dastardly acts. aft(prenominal) a few hours I called Butler and Juliet(Butlers sister) into the room. I told them that according to the book, all we have to do is stakeout at an ancient tree at a full moon at a river bend. Juliet questioned me about fairies and how they werent real, that got me thinking that all this work could be for nothing, but again the book proved quite promising. I told Juliet to get a cage into the cellar. We had over 100 places to try, it wouldnt be as easy as I thought. Four months of searching, not a hit. After 1 hour of waiting the proximity alarms flashed red someone was here. Hacked the scope and saw a figure twist down beside a tree. It was a possible fairy picking up a seat. In the bushes I saw Butler hold the dart side arm with the red dot pointed at her neck. Butler pulled the trigger, but out of a million odds she ducked again. Now she notice d she was under fire, we would have to do this manually. Butler was already ahead of the game and started to taunt the fairy. New that it was my turn so I started to scare the fairy. Butler stood behind her preparing a second tranquilizer dart while stalled her. Finally Butler shot her in the back and took her helmet.I couldnt believe how human the fairy looked. When We got TO Fowl Manor I examined the helmet and found a sensitive tracking device. Of course they be following us now. Or they be following the tracker at least. I told Butler to get the car. Its time for road slip-up number 2. When we got too the dock I told Butler we needed a diversion. Butler nodded then I went to the nearest whaler and dumped the tracker inside. I put a mob there also to whoever was tracking it down. When got back to the car Butler was still fighting some men. Felt sorry for them. Even I dont want to pick a fight with him. After he finished he came to the car and we drove back to Fowl Manor. Went to our prisoner in a cage in the basement. It was time to taunt her once again. Told her, her name Holly Short, rank Captain and the rules in the house. Finally she asked how knew these things. I was surprised. It seemed like she didnt know she had a name tag on her. Told her I was aiming for gold. She again asked how do we know everything. Knew that couldnt tell err had the book so I told her we gave her a truth serum and she told us everything. She went to a deferral thinking how had she had betrayed her people. Aft and went to Butler who was monitoring the cameras. Nothing yet. I told Butler to try the avenue and freeze the picture. He did and five black figures appeared on the screen. I handed him a bigger helmet that had several filters that allowed him to see shielded fairies. Butler went outside to take care of them. Before he left I told him to get the head to talk with better scared than dead. After a few minutes Butler came back with a handful of technology and left or prep aration for my special visitor. Theyd put a time stop on Fowl Manor.Seconds later the clock stopped and an unshielded figure stepped onto the lawn. The game was on the dot beginning. Came to the front door and allowed him to come in. Told him that in return for the captain that I wanted a ton often-carat gold. He told me that he was going to kill us all with a bomb that I already knew of. I told him I could escape it. He was bewildered. He told me that nobody could escape the bio bomb, and then he left. After he left I went straight to the surveillance room and I noticed that Butler wasnt going around doing his rounds. Diode butler and asked him what was he doing.

The scores of China and France are significantly lower than America, even if they out slightly advantage in some items. As for China, though it had highest GDP real growth rate 9. % in 2011, due to the large population, the per capita GDP is dramatically lower than America. That means Chinese citizens are having not enough disposable income to co nsume. The French government although utilizes preferential to attract investment, the Minimum Hourly Wage is the highest than China and the US. It will be greatly increased the cost of production. On the contrary, not only the US government provides favourable policy and huge consumer market, but also the appropriate R&D expenditure and reasonable scienti? research institutions. To sum up, the US market has greater potential than the other two countries. 4. 0 Type of method to internationalize With regard to internationalize, the Elecdyne could choose the most compatible method to enter a new market. The advantage and disadvantage of the way to internationalize should be analysed rigorously by the management team on the basis of established expansion strategy. The proper methods are joint ventures, Greenfield sites, mergers or acquisitions respectively. Joint VentureThe Joint Venture means that the cooperation of two or more individuals or businesses in which from each one approve to share profit, loss and control in a specific company. (Investopedia, 2012) Greenfield Sites An eye socket of agricultural or forest land, or some other undeveloped site earmarked for commercial development or project engineering. (Businessdictionary, 2012) Mergers and Acquisitions A merger is bodied between two similarly sized companies, which is combined to shape a new company. An acquisition occurs when one company lawfully purchases another and becomes the new owner. Investinganswers, 2012) The following table indicates analyse the advantage and disadvantage of these three methods. Type of method Strengths Weaknesses Joint Venture * The opportunity to gain new capacity and expertise * communion of risks with a venture partner * Access to greater resources, including specialized staff and technology * The objectives of the venture may not fully clear and executed to each participant. * Different cultures concepts and management styles may affect integration and cooperatio n. Imbalance in levels of expertise Greenfield Sites * The environment changed from rural to urban use * Good policies of local government * Wholly owned and fully control * More expensive housing * Demand excessive cash * Undertake full risk * High initial investment Mergers and Acquisitions * A merger does not require cash * A merger may be achieved tax-free. * The merger allows the acquirer to avoid many of the dear(p) and time-consuming aspects of asset purchases * Form a scale of production and reduce production cost * Increase product awareness, enhance corporate image. * Diseconomies of scale, which may give rise to higher unit costs. * Conflict of culture between different businesses, may reduce the effectiveness of the integration. * Make a part of workers unnecessary, this may have a bad effect on motivation. According to the situation and background of the Elecdyne, the best option is incorporated with other electronics. In short, it will be spiritual rebirth current p light, increasing profit and lower the risks. In the long run, it will be good for the company to gain prestige and more agile development space. 5. 0 ConclusionThe findings indicate that the Elecdyne confront the challenge and opportunity according to STEEP analysis. And the report also analyses the external and internal environment of Elecdyne based on the SWOT and Porters Diamond Theory. Through the PEST analysis, makes a compare between three countries, and finally concluded the US was the best choice for the Elecdyne to utilize the overseas market. This paper has finally advised Elecdyne to mergers or acquisitions with other countries. Essay on Bede’s Ecclesiastical History of the English People

England has al charges been a strong point of Christianity, as such, the difficult cartridge clips that came from the conquest of the territory by the Romans up to the moment when finally Henry eight decides to separate from the Vatican and their deceptions ma world power of England one of the near important places where Christian history has been made.During such times of change, disrespect the different forces that shaped and misshaped the path of faith and religion in England, close to conducts remained unchanged such as the belief that a person should focus only in what was adequate according to the standards that the Vatican had stated that were adequate. The counterbalance four chapters of the Venerable the Venerable Bedes loudness only refer to England in the way it was formed, the benefits and paradisiacal purlieu that both England and its surrounding neighbours had to offer in terms of water, soil, vegetation and even animals. In the first bear, Bede makes a strong point of reference in the martyrdom that British Christians suffered at the hands of the Roman conquistador empire. It is interesting the difference between other martyr obliges and references to the ones that Bede states in the book. squatting 2Here, at that placefore, the head of just ab out courageous martyr was struck off, and here he received the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love Him. provided he who gave the wicked stroke, was non permitted to rejoice over the deceased for his eyes dropped upon the ground together with the infernal martyrs head. (Bede, Book 1VII, 51-52) Other accounts only make strong points of the punishment that God allegedly gives those who trim down the martyrdom in cases against the female virtue and those where the executor is a member of their own family.Though it is not evidently put, the compose of Bede actually infers that God will claim vengeance to allone that dares raise an arm against His Flock. In the second base book, Bede leaves behind the martyrdom that suffered the Brits at the hands of the Romans and deepens into the creation of the modern day Britannica form of beliefs. It seems that as a result of the preceding changes and strength that the martyrs of days before provided the Christian belief in England gave the church service building sufficient hold to unite then flourishing Kingdom by respecting religious festivities such as Easter time.It should be noted that by the time that Bede is ma pouf reference to evidently St. Agustin (or Agustine to some authors) makes no reference to an Irish saint Saint Patrick that had sufficient leverage among the clergy of the time. Almost 300 old age have passed between the death of Albas martyr and the next evident miracle in Bedes book, the time when Bishop Mellitus by simple prayers suffocates a fire. Jack 3And thus the man of God, whose mind was inflamed with the fire of overlord charity, and who was wont to drive away the powers of the air b y his frequent prayers, from doing harm to himself, or his people, was deservedly allowed to live over the worldly winds and flames, and to obtain that they should not injure him or his. (Bede, Book 2VII, 114-115) According to Bede it is only through the power of prayer and a meditative life, succumbed to the will, power and guidance of God (through the church) that any person can command any forces of nature and prevent damage, injury or even death. So farthermost Bede has been able to demonstrate the power and benefits of being a truthful Christian to those readers without dabbling into politics. However, by book three, Bede can make a strong statement of this since Chapter I, when he states that a Christian ability (Oswald) can restitute the faith of the people in the nation and in his own kingship. One of the most important things to remember when reading this book is that monarchies were believed to be granted by God Himself, thus it was a divine right. Most of Book three is d evoted to two main characters King Oswald who vaguely resembles king Arthur in the greatness that he receives from this historian as a God following king who, happened to be so saint that even after being slaughtered in battle performed miracles. The other person of importance is Bishop Aidan who was a strong supporter of King Oswalds piety actions, much like the wizard pigeon hawk in King Arthurs translations this was a particularly important character in the development of the kings ruling.Jack 4 However, it seems that when the kingdom lacked of religious stability, the worst circumstances were present In the abovementioned social class of the aforesaid eclipse, which was presently followed by the pestilence, in which also Bishop Colman, being overcome by the unanimous admit of the Catholics, returned home, Deusdedit, the sixth bishop of the church of Canterbury, died on the I4th of July.Erconbert, also, king of Kent, departed this life the same month and day departure his kin gdom to his son Egbert, (Bede, Book 4I, 204) It seems interesting that a terrible distemper such as pestilence (or plague) might have been deemed common enough not to deserve any of the religious teachings that the book of Bede is full of. There are no prayers that will stop or detain the disease in its tracks, but more over, it refers to mundane affairs such as the setting the affairs in order of a specific archbishop.Despite this, most of the book is full of miracles that happened during the pestilence, people who in their dying beds proverb the Glory of Heaven or deaths that were simply heavenly with no pain or misery. Naturally, as the book progresses in dates, other important events happen such as the assassination of royal heirs, though not in the way that Shakespearian artists would do, but simply stating that anyone who knows the basis of Christianity will deem his or her Jack 5life in little value because the promise of everlasting life would conquer their hearts in a mom ent. Finally, book five speaks of basically the same things than the other four books, nonetheless, chapter XII has a significant level Having stood there a long time in much dread, not knowing what to do, which way to turn, or what end I might expect, on a sudden I heard behind me the tone of a most hideous and wretched lamentation, and at the same time a loud laughing, as of a rude multitude insulting captured enemies. When that noise, growing plainer, came up to me, I observed a plurality of evil spirits dragging the howling and lamenting souls of men into the midst of the darkness, whilst they themselves laughed and rejoiced. Among those men, as I could discern, there was one shorn like a clergyman, a layman, and a woman. (Bede, Book 5XII, 286) The importance of this description is the imagery that it gives, since this description until our days souls in purgatory damnation have been depicted in the same way and even using the same three human elements The clergyman, the layma n and the woman.Nonetheless, the entire chapter portrays a vision rather similar to the one that Dante provides almost 600 years later An afterlife divided into sections that are populated by those who are less than perfect, barely repented and outwardly evil. Just like Jack 6 Dante, the visionary in Bedes book five chapter twelve has a guidance that explains things to him so that he might return to life and tell everyone. What is the truth? Well, it is difficult to state it.According to the Bible, Jesus came to flat coat to create a final covenant, one of the eternal love and forgiveness nevertheless, the Church had gone out of their way to create an environment of fear and uncertainty. During the time of Bede, it is evident that Church in England used hell and purgatory as means of control and coercion both in social and political atmospheres. Undoubtedly, the use of these boogie-woogie men for the society in early Christianity and the first years of medieval era was beneficial providing church and rulers with sufficient authority to handle and create empires.Would it work nowadays? Yes it will as it has begun to work with the newfangled age belief the uncertainty of what lies beyond the natural death is something that will present a chore in the human mind as a result, whatever we can find that will still us will become a leverage for those who provide it to us. Mother to Son and the Coora Flower: a Poetry Analysis

pose to Son and The Coora Flower A Poetry Analysis In poetry, more so than any some other form of literature, understanding sound, meaning and written report ar key to understanding the work itself. In the eggshell of the verse forms Mother to Son by Langston Hughes and The Coora Flower by Gwendolyn stick pop these elements, when heavily foc utilise upon, allow the subscriber to discover the message that these writers were attempting to convey.Thought both writers use these elements to their fullest to communicate their respective messages, the method and messages vary giganticly. In the poem Mother to Son, Hughes tells the tale of a mother speaking to her son approximately life and the severeships that one moldiness face to provoke it in the world. Hughes uses extended metaphor to urinate this view. In the second cablegram he writes Life for me aint been no crystal tone, which initiates the metaphor. He then proceeds to describe the stair of her life. With the busines s concerns, Its had tacks in it, and splinters, and boards torn up, and places with no carpet on the floor he support the mothers exact that like has not been a crystal stair possibility by using the metaphor to sustain a direct comparison between im ameliorateions in the staircase and the pitfalls in life. He continues on with the line bare symbolizing rock bottom, nothingness, the absence of value. Then poem then begins to rise in action to hint the continued climb and the need to continue on, which is absorbn in the following lines Ise been a-climbin on,/ and reachin landins,/ and turnin corners,/ and sometimes goin in the drab the narrator states to the son once more that they still continue to climb and that life was uncomplicated for them. The style and the line structure chosen by Hughes help facilitate the message. He use truly simple language besides is able to invoke strong emotions from the referee. The language would potentially lead the reader to believe that t his is truly a simple woman who had to struggle everyday of her life to make it. If Hughes had used more formal language within the work I do believe the mood would withstand been lost. The use of And at the beginning of lines creates almost a stepping motion within the rhythm of the countersigns. limns four-spot, five and sextette in conjunction with the use of And creates a feeling of stepping or maybe in time falling trim down stairs. Each lines description gets progressively worse until there is nothing left, which signified having nothing left to lose. Then with lines ten, eleven and twelve the use of And creates the sense of climbing back up with the same speed at which you fell. Line twelve ends the climb in sound and creates a leveling off that coincides with the walk through the dark stated in the poem. This established a mood of cautiousness, feeling things are. I thought this was a perfect example of theme and sound coming together to support meaning. I especially like the lines, have ont you set down on the steps. / Cause you find its kinder hard. It shows that giving up isnt an option that quitting is the easy way out and that continuing to struggle on and fight is whats authentically difficult. She asks no more of the son than she would ask of herself because she knows that it can be done, she was able to accomplish it herself. In Brooks poem The Coora Flower, she writes about escapism and ingenuousness. The poem starts off with the narrator telling the reader what she learned about and then we are snatched back into reality with the lines, Now I am coming home. / This, at least, is Real, and what I know. The following stanzas construct the comparison between life in school which is the escape and the life external which is reality It was restful, learning nothing necessary. / School is a tiny vacation. At least you can residual/ But now its Real Business. I am Coming Home. And as we read on we discover that reality is harsh, cold, pa inful and unrelenting and that the other world is more optimistic, warm and liberated. My mother lead be screaming in an almost dirty dress. / The crack is gone. So a Man allow be in the house. / I must watch myself. / I must not dare to sleep. These lines put reality within the poem. Brooks also relies heavily on nuances within the structure and language to establish the message. The stanzas that contain information about school are longer and articulate. The lines flow and are inviting. When the lines about reality are read they are short, cold and very deliberate they give a sense of rigidity. The language is very direct and in some case demanding I must. All stanzas about whats real are ii lines long while the ones that focus on school are four lines long. The statements toward school came off as being very cynical to me. It was restful, learning nothing necessary At least you can sleep, the use of at least in these lines and the line that follows are what created the cynici sm for me. It seemed as if she didnt respect what went on in school because it wasnt the harshness of her everyday life. Capitalization is something that caught my attention. The word Real always has the first letter capitalized, which to me established a mood of seriousness within the statements that contained it. I feel this is true the second use of Coming Home and Man in line fourteen. The capitalization on these words was carefully chosen to continue facilitating the theme and meaning. There is one line in this poem that caught my attention and required me to reread repeatedly to get what she truly meant that line is which is not exhaust from grief. At first I thought it was just in reference to the previous line At least you can think of love or feeling your boy friend against you but upon multiple readings I realized that this was in reference to the whole stanza. Shes hinting at the fact that even good things come with their element of heartache.I found that to be an intere sting idea and it shows that the narrator may never be able to find peace, maybe she thrives on the hardship and anguish that comes with her life because that is all she knows. When the two works are placed side by side one would have a hard time make a continuative between them. It is true that the differences between the works are great but elements exist in both some minor, some major but all important. whizz could make the simple connection both individual were African- American doesnt give them the respect they deserve. Also that connection would have to be made off historical references outside of the work because nothing in each work given you indication that they are African American. The connection that should be made is that the both wrote of harm and hardship that both used elements like structure, language, tone to convey their message but end the came out with very different view points. From a psychological perspective the reader can focus on the fact that in Hughes poem the adversity within it was deemed to be external to the one relationship shown. In the case of Brooks the adversity was internal to the shown relationship. In both situations the writers own their material, you get the sense that these works are true to life for both of them. But where Hughes work is empowering, Brooks work is saddening because you cant see the light at the end of the tunnel for her narrator you just she the cold, harsh reality that is life, which was her intention. Her story was never meant to be uplifting it was meant to depress and sadden. Even in her few moments of joy, the narrator still could be ingenious because she knew at any moment it could all end. Both writers are successful at establishing a mood and theme throughout there works. I believe if these writers had an opportunity to sit down with either they would see elements of themselves in the other. In one case the young and still hopefully individual and in the other flavor and scared individual that the young may become. But in the end these are my interpretations and it up to you to make your own. Thats the wonderful part about poetry its different for everyone who reads it.

What Social Factors Affect Students’ Use of Online Registration: An Exploratory Study

What Social Factors Affect Students Use of Online Registration An searching StudyXiaobing Cao, Ph.D., Institutional detective Robert Brodnick, Ph.D., Director and Assistant Professor Planning and Research University of the Pacific Association for Institutional Research forty- due south Annual Forum June, 2002 (Toronto, Canada)Track 3 Institutional Management and PlanningAbstractWhat Social Factors Affect Students Use of Online Registration An Exploratory StudyThis study investigated how social factors repair college schoolchilds implement of the online enrollment service that was recently offered in a buck private university in Northern California. During the first year, about 31% of the students who pre-registered their courses phthisisd the service. The results indicated that academic and demographic factors stirred students use of the online service. For example, students from certain disciplines (e.g. Pharmacy and International Studies) and high income families were to a greater extent likely to use the online service. It is interesting to notice that the results did not show a signifi arouset impact of gender on the use of online adjustment. Implications are presented for institutions considering alternative registration methods or the implementation of technological solutions to administrative processes. What Social Factors Affect Students Use of Online Registration An Exploratory StudyThe menstruation study focuses on how social factors affect students use of online registration. The online service was first offered at the university in restrain 2001. Using online registration can be viewed as smart technology adaptation. However, updated literature in students current technology adoption is rare. It is worthwhile to investigate how social factors affect college students in adapting the new technology. There are two objectives for this study reviewing relevant literature of the online registration and examining the impacts of social factors on use of the online service. Review of LiteratureAccording to the literature, online registration1 can be divided into three formats of development. The first stage is the 1970s. This is a developing stage in which nearly universities led higher education institutions to experience initial new technology application in nerve (Michael, 1976 Chapman & Gambrell, 1976 Brown, 1979 Hengehold & Keim, 1975 Adams, 1974). During this stage, online registration underwent a period of experiments and testing. Online registration was beginning to be recognized for its operation in assisting university administration. The second stage refers to the decade of the 1980s. During these years, online registration was widely used by universities across the country. New features in the registration process were added and more experience was summarized (Heard, 1987 work & Parker, 1983 Arnett & Posey, 1986 Lonabocker & Long, 1983 Lisker, 1987). This period can be viewed as the stabilized stage. Cook & Parker (1983) conducted a survey of online registration practices among 66 colleges and universities. They found that online registration had improved academic advising.Online registration in the literature review refers to various methods by means of which a registration can be completed, such as, central processor computer, telephone, and wind vane.New technology application had saved time for students, faculty and staff members (1987). Online registration has been clearly confirmed as a successful approach (Lonabocker & Long, 1983 Arnett & Posey, 1986).The third stage includes the 1990s and beyond. This period can be viewed as the enhancement stage. There have been new ways of exploring online registration such as using web service (Swein, 1997), integration of internet technology into all phases of the education process (Thomas, Carswell & Price, 1998), and getting specific groups of students regard in online registration (Kelly, 1998). Thomas et al. pointed out that the inte grative approach has been effective in university administration. The third stage indicates that online registration has been well developed, looking for new ways to enhance the new technology environment through new technology convergence.Theoretical Framework & Research QuestionsSocial cognitive theory (Bandura, 1986) helps explain how human behaviors are affected by both social factors (e.g. family income) and personal factors (e.g. selfconcepts). The theory suggests that different social characteristics of students affect how they adapt themselves into the new technology environment. Based on social cognitive theory, the current study is investigating how social versatiles affect students use of online registration. The following are the research questions. 1. To what extent do student academic variables impact the use of online registration? 2. To what extent do student demographic variables impact the use of online registration?3. What are the do of the academic and demograp hic variables on the use of online registration? MethodologyThe information were extracted from the university student information system. Thedependent variable was the registration method (online vs. walk-in). The independent variables were in two parts academic variables and demographic variables. TheSocial Factors and Online Registration 5 University of the Pacificacademic variables included Major, Class, Grade, and Degree Level. The major was measured by the college or school a student majored in. The manakin described the students class train including freshmen, sophomore, junior, senior, and graduate. The degree level was measured by two categories graduate level and undergraduate level. The grade was measured by the students cumulative GPA.
